Villagers begin with victory

CARDINIA WATERS

The 2023-24 Pennant Bowls season commenced on Saturday and Cardinia Waters began its campaign with a spirited win against Upwey-Tecoma at home.

Starting better than the visitors, Cardinia Waters held a 16-shot margin at afternoon tea time.

However, Upwey-Tecoma came right back in the last half of the game getting within four shots of the villagers.

Cardinia Waters needed nerves of steel in the final few ends to hold off Upwey-Tecoma, but they hung on to finish the game eight shots up, with two rinks winning, one drawing and one loss.

Providing his usual strong and steady game, Bill Hite was skip of the best winning rink celebrating a 26-13 victory.

Even dropping four shots on the penultimate end didn’t stop Bill, Dennis Patmore, Donny Gibson and John Carr from holding the whole side together.

Last to finish, the rink of Bryan Stevens, Marion Stevens, Steve Hale and Ian Kennedy held together and withheld their strong finishing opponents for a two-shot win.

The drawn game of 19-all was played by John Van Vugt, Del Dance, Jim Barrie and Cathy Swinkels…the latter playing in her first pennant bowls game ever.

This combination led early, handed up the lead late, and needed a great four shots on the last end to manage a draw.

This win sees Cardinia Waters holding down fourth spot on the ladder, and next week face Cranbourne away.

Cranbourne received an absolute flogging at Ferntree Gully this week, and resides on the bottom rung of the ladder.
