GARFIELD GOLF

Considering the amount of rain and cold damp conditions the course at Garfield Golf Club has held up very well over the last week.

The recently cored greens are also recovering very well and will soon be back to their putting best.

Saturday was Monthly Medal Day and attracted a huge field of 146 punters keen to get the prize.

Two great rounds of 76 off the stick were achieved by Russ Loughridge and Darren Allen with Allen taking home the medal courtesy of his two-shot handicap advantage.

Loughridge can console himself with the best A Grade handicap score on a countback.

David Werner got the B Grade event win with a round of nett 69 whilst Jack Watt, a visitor from Berwick Montuna, won the C Grade event with the same score.

Graeme Sparkes defeated Pat McDonagh on a countback for the D Grade event with a final score of nett 71.

Werner, Watt and McDonagh all had the best scratch scores for their respective grades.

A total of the 12 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with Paul Govaars getting a pair of those which include one on the long and difficult 18th hole.

As per usual, with the course playing very long, just seven players out of the entire field were able to play to – or better their handicap – for the day.

Both Doug Amos and Chris Davies scored 79 off the stick whilst Steely Mateariki had a round of 78, the same score shot by Ray James…and Nick Gray had a round of 77.

A final score of nett 75 was the number required to finish in the money, which was achieved by some 36 players.

Mick Matthews, coming off the three runners up rounds, finally broke the shackles by having the best score on Monday getting the B Grade win with a nice round of 41 points.

Leo De Jager, having a good run of form, won the A Grade event with a handicap round of 36 points.

A final score of 35 points or better back to a countback was required to finish in the money.

Thursday’s event was virtually a complete washout with heavy rain settling in around 9.30am with plenty of players returning to the club house where hot coffees were in great demand.

However, a field of 24 battled on with Darren Grayson coming up trumps with a final score of 36 points.

This Saturday is the playing of the Barnes/Fallon Mixed Canadian event which commences play at 11.15am from the first tee.

If you would like to play in this event but haven’t found a partner, please contact the club re your assistance.

For everyone else it is the first round of the Summer Cup which is a stroke event.
