GARFIELD GOLF
Garfield member Matt Ross has made it a fortnight to remember by winning the 2023 54-Hole Midweek Championship with a three-round total of 112 points.
Coming off two wins last week, Ross fought off the challengers, defeating Trevor Male by a solitary point over the lengthy three-round journey.
A great field of 130 players turned out in glorious weather on Saturday for the day’s competition of single stableford.
A final score of 32 points back to a countback was required to finish in the money.
Andrew Hale got the A Grade win by a countback from Richard Perry with a final score of 37 points, whilst Peter Bogart broke a long run of outs to get the B Grade win with a score of 39 points.
Malcolm Hirt – the man with seven career Garfield Monthly Medals to his name – won the C Grade event by a countback from Martin Dinsdale with a handicap round of 36 points.
Cam McCormick took out the D Grade event also by a countback from Ron Zomer with a score of 40 points.
A total of 22 players were able to play to, or better their handicap for the day.
On a great day for the iron players, a total of 19 birdies were scored on the par threes.
The 11th was most accommodating, giving up six of those.
On Thursday a field of 79 presented for play with Colin Crowle, another recent winner, getting the A Grade win by a countback from Peter Scott with a score of 40 points.
Alan Borch was the best in for the B Grade event with a final score of 39 points, defeating Gavin De Jager and Michael Banger by a solitary point.
A handicap round of 36 points back to a countback was the number to finish in the money.
Bob Calderara continued on with his great form by coming in with a score of 38 points, which included a nearest the pin and two birdies for his round.
A total of 20 players were able to match or better their handicap for the day.
Deanna Hargreaves had the week’s best round with a Tuesday winning score of 45 points.
Veteran golfers please take note that the next event is at Mirboo North this Wednesday 27 September. This Saturday is a game of single stableford.
