GARFIELD GOLF

The weather turned nasty at Garfield Golf Club on Friday and Saturday this week after golfers enjoyed some beautiful conditions in the lead-up to the wintery blast.

Rain, and high damaging winds, caused the postponement of Saturday’s Monthly medal event to this Saturday with a field of just 52 facing the starters’ gun.

Bob Calderara stood head and shoulders above the rest this week with a brilliant winning round on Monday with a score of 43 points playing off his mark of 13, which meant he actually played to a mark of six.

Calderara backed that effort up on Saturday, finishing second in the A Grade event with a handicap round of 36 points.

Calderara went down to Peter McNeish via a countback decision playing off his new mark of 11.

Single figures here we come, Bob.

Brenton Hollingworth won Saturday’s B Grade event from Hayden Newnham via a countback decision with a score of 37 points.

A final score of 33 points back to a countback was the number required to finish in the money.

Another golfer in fine touch has been Tony Mafodda, who has had a very consistent form run over the last three weeks.

Mafodda won the Monday event on 22 August with a round of 38 points then finished third on Thursday 31 August with a round of 37 points.

He then finally got beaten by a countback decision this Thursday for the A Grade event with a score of 39 points by Jack Henning.

A great field of 84 players took advantage of the fine weather on Thursday with a final score of 34 points or better required to finish in the money.

Stephen Bird won the B Grade event by a countback from Gordon Edwards with a signed for round of 37 points.

Bob Calderara, having a great time of it, posted yet another good score of 37 points.

Trevor Franklin scored the two birdies for his round on the 8th and 16th holes.

Alex Green also gets his name in the headlines this week.

Alex had the equal-best round on Monday, winning B Grade with a final score of 43 points playing off his mark of 31.

Mafodda added to his great run with another handicap score of 36 points.

Daphne Elleman took out the Ladies Monthly Medal on Tuesday with a final score of 76 defeating Bernie Clark by the single stroke.

All members are advised that the Over 55s event scheduled for play on Monday 18 September has been called off.
