GARFIELD GOLF

There was a good dump of rain at Garfield Golf Club on Friday followed by a very cold Saturday…with the gauge just creeping into double figures.

The ‘Karli Van Der Horst Show’ just keeps on delivering, this time with the extraordinary result of three wins in three days.

Van Der Horst, Garfield’s most successful player over the last two years, started her run-on Sunday, with a B Grade winning round of 38 points, then on Monday won the A Grade event with an even better score of 41 points.

Van Der Horst then delivered one more time, winning the ladies event with a handicap score of 36 points.

Well done, Karli…that’s impressive consistency indeed.

Saturday saw the playing of the quarter finals of the Captains Trophy Match-Play event with all results going as predicted.

Clint Williams, giving away 15 shots to David Zaffarese, romped home with a 5 and 4 victory.

Peter McNeish, giving away just the 19 shots to Darren McKerrow, had a 3 and 2 win.

Nick Gray also giving up plenty of shots, 15 to be exact, made light of his handicap by winning 6 and 5.

Peter Marquis had a walkover victory from Peter Smith.

This sets up a mouthwatering semi-final between two very good players in Nick Gray and Peter McNeish whilst I expect Clint Williams to get over Peter Marquis in the semi-finals which are due for play on Saturday September.

Despite the cold showery conditions, a field of 104 turned out on Saturday for a game of single stableford.

Geoff Turner broke a run of outs to get the A Grade win on a countback with a score of 37 points over Grant McLure.

It was a three-way countback for the B Grade event with Robert Toth getting up from Andre Van Gent and Steve Wallace with a final score of 38 points.

On a day of countbacks Peter Kelly took out the C Grade event from Mick Matthews with a score of 38 points.

A final score of 32 points or better was the number for a prize down the line.

Andrew Went scored a spectacular eagle three on the 17th hole.

On Thursday a field of 76 players faced the starter with a couple of very nice rounds handed in.

Gordon Edwards won the B Grade event with a score of 42 points to defeat Ray Phillips by two points, whilst Trevor Male returned to the winners list with a great round of 42 points playing off his mark of 13 to get the A Grade win by three points from Greg Macklin.

A final score of 35 points back to a countback was required to finish in the money.

Kevan McMillan scored the two nearest the pins on the 8th and 9th holes.

Next Saturday is a game of single stableford.
