Franklin on fire at Garfield

GARFIELD GOLF

This week’s field sizes were greatly determined by the prevailing weather at Garfield Golf Club with members experiencing a wide-range of conditions.

Thursday’s blue skies and clear weather attracted a very healthy field of 93, whilst on Saturday it was completely the opposite with howling winds, extreme cold and forecast rains (which never arrived) resulting in just 58 players fronting the starter.

Trevor Franklin made it back-to-back Thursday wins, this time with a count back A Grade winning score of 36 points over Heath Barclay.

Peter Johnson returned to the winners list with the B Grade victory with the day’s best score of 38 points.

Ray Phillips took out the C Grade event, also by a count back decision defeating Liam McMahon with a handicap round of 36 points.

A final score of 34 points or better, back to a count back, was the number for a ball down the line.

Just a total of seven birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with Terry McLaughlin scoring two of those.

Just the two grades were up for decision on Saturday due to the field size with the overall scoring of a less-than-average number, with a final score of 33 points or better good enough to finish in the money. Brian Webster won the A Grade event by a count back from Paul Kaye with a round of 37 points, whilst Brendan Pola finished on top for the B Graders, also by a count back from Ben Balfour with a score of 35 points.

In very difficult scoring conditions just the three birdies on the par threes were scored for the day.

Ray ‘Mr September’ Pund scored the two nearest the pins on the fourth and eighth holes.

Bernie Clark has had a great month in the ladies’ events and notched up her fourth win in as many weeks by taking out Saturday’s stableford event with a score of 31 points.

Well done to you Bernie, also for winning Tuesday’s medal with a round of nett 71.

Monday’s $5 comp drew a field of 61 players with Kevin (Witz End) Whitmore getting the A Grade win with a great round of 41 points to defeat James Dimtsas in second place.

Don Stark won the B Grade round with a score of 36 points to defeat Ben Thorn by two points.

Next Saturday is a game of single stableford.
