GARFIELD GOLF
Bloomin cold weather was the state of play at Garfield Golf Club this week as we enter the coldest month of the year.
A very cold wind kept things very chilly on Thursday whilst Saturday players awoke to a damp morning which cleared by the afternoon.
However, even with preferred lies in place, the fairways remain the driest part of the course which is a credit to all involved in the drainage works completed over the last three years.
Saturday was Monthly Medal Day and attracted a good size field of 122 golfers.
Scoring was of a good standard with a final score of two-over nett 71 required to finish in the money.
Best in for the day was David Zaffarese with a round of 82 – nett 64 – to win the medal one shot better than Glenn Wells and a further two shots back to Tim Moore in third place.
Nick Gray, having a good run, won the A Grade handicap event with a score of 68 whilst the aforementioned Zafarese and Moore won their respective handicap grades.
Best in for the day with the A Grade scratch win, once again was Shane Male with a very good score of 75.
Wells finished up the best scratch score in for the B Grade event, with his score of 81, whilst Harry Huyskens, having a good run, got the C Grade scratch win on a count back with a round of 90.
Another good size field of 77 contested Thursday’s stableford event with the consistent Trevor Franklin returning to the winners list with the A grade win with a better-than-handicap round of 37 points.
Warren Arnott, a new name, won the C Grade event with the same score, whilst a round of 35 points achieved by yet another consistent player in Jim Accettura took out the B Grade event.
A final score of 34 points back to a count back was the number for a ball down the line.
Just the seven birdies for the day were scored on the par threes with James Dimtsas knocking his in on the 11th from 50mm away.

Leo De Jager continued on his winning ways with the best result in for Monday’s stableford round with a score of 34 points back to a countback decision.
Next Saturday is a stroke event, round two of the Cox Cup.
