GARFIELD GOLF

It was fantastic weather for golf this week with plenty of sunshine around after cold frosty starts to the morning – ensuring good size fields at Garfield on Thursday and Saturday in particular.

A field of 82, the largest for the year, lined up on Thursday with three single-figure markers having the best of the scoring.

Paul Govaars played some six shots better than his handicap of nine to get the A Grade win with a score of 42 points to defeat Mark Johnson, a seven-marker, and Grant McLure, playing off eight, both with scores of 41 points.

Ray Phillips broke a long run of outs to get the B Grade win with 37 points whilst Tim Moore took out the C Grade victory with a score of 35 points.

A less than impressive score of 32 points or better was good enough to get a ball down the line. Saturday was the first of two qualifying rounds of the club’s annual Four-Ball Par Championships with the scoring being of a good standard.

A fantastic field of 68 teams turned out in the sunny conditions.

A score of plus-6 is setting the pace after the first round which was achieved by four pairings.

Jackson Bennett and Ryan Stark, Andrew Went and Scott Corbett, Martin Spurway and Bob Collins and Robert Toth and Tony Grayson all had great rounds of golf.

A final score of plus-3 or better was the number for a ball down the line.

Jeanette Mitchell is a player in good touch, after winning the Children’s Variety Bash event on Anzac Day she won the ladies single par event on Saturday with a round of minus-2 whilst also chalking up another win by taking out Tuesday’s Monthly Medal.

Tym Davey scored the two nearest the pins both on the 8th and 14th holes.

Just a total of six birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with two of those being scored by Alister Petrov.

John Roberts and Bob Edwards scored wins in their respective grades on Monday both with handicap rounds of 36 points.

Next Saturday is the second and final round for qualifying of the Four-Ball Par Championships.
