DEEP CREEK GOLF

Nick Gray is the 2023 Club Champion at Deep Creek Golf Club after a brilliant come-from-behind victory in the third and final round on Saturday.

Gray – the 2022 runner up – faced a seven-shot deficit heading into the third and final round, but fired a best of the day 81 off the stick to reel in leader Ricky Davies…who carded a gross score of 91.

Gray finished with a three-round total of 244, ending three shots clear of Davies, with Peter Reilly finishing in third place on 256.

Davies can console himself with the fact that he reversed the result on Gray in the handicap event, finishing with a nett score of 220 to win by three shots from Gray on 223.

Mark Hatton was a runaway winner in B Grade, shooting a final round gross score of 88 to extend his nine-shot lead over Roger Parker to an impressive 11-shot win.

Hatton’s three-round stroke total of 262 not only won B Grade, but placed him fifth in the overall club standings!

Ross Maclean ended with a three-round handicap total of 225 to win the B Grade handicap event.

Jarred Bester played a fantastic final round of 86 off the stick to win the C Grade Club Championships by six shots from overnight leader Steven Van Roy.

Van Roy began his round in sensational fashion, having a hole-in-one on the second, but couldn’t fight off the challenge of Bester

Bester gradually improved over the three rounds with scores of 105, 96 and 86 resulting in a final three-round total of 287.

Van Roy won the C Grade Handicap Club Championship with a score of 221.

In the Junior Boys, Lyriq Bester finished with a final round 93 to end on 293 for a two-shot win over Jack Scarborough (295), while it took two thrilling extra holes to force a result in the Junior Girls Club Championship.

Up and coming stars Lillian Bu and Ciara Davies were locked on a three-round total of 328 after 54 holes, before Bu triumphed on the second play-off hole.

Peter Reilly, who finished third in the Club Championships, is the Deep Creek Senior Champion with a gross score of 256.

• LADIES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Suzanne van Strien has saved her best for last to claim the 2023 Ladies Club Championship.

Van Strien, who headed into the final round with an 11-shot lead over Delanie Lewis, added an 87 to her opening rounds of 89 and 88 to claim a highly-impressive 15-shot victory.

Van Strien ended with a three-round total of 264, with Lewis (279) in second place and Leah Barker (316) in third.

Lewis gained her final-round satisfaction by winning the A Grade Handicap championships, with a nett score of 243.

Exciting youngster Lillian Bu won the B Grade championships with a gross score of 328, with Shirley McGrath carding a nett score of 237 to claim the handicap title.

Sandra Pool won the C Grade championships, signing off on 80 stableford points across the three rounds of competition.

A big week at Deep Creek started last Monday with a Par event.

The winner was Ron Parsons (26), who won via a countback from Levi Sua (8) with a great score of +4.

Down the lines went to Peter Mackie +3, John Curtin +2, John Kingman +2, Christopher James +1, Heath Barclay +1, Tom McDermott +1, and Peter Diss, Rex Ryan, Frankie Chiu, David McMahon and William Carmichael who all finished square with the card.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd: David McMahon (3.3m) and 16th: Stewart MacDonald (1.8m).

WEDNESDAY

Dreadful conditions saw round three of the 2023 Midweek Club Championships abandoned last Wednesday meaning the leaders after round two were anointed as champions.

The top five in A Grade were Harry Elyasie (6) 80, 80 (160), Levi Sua (8) 81, 81 (162), Darren Grayson (10) 84, 84 (168), Heath Barclay (9) 84, 85 (169) and Frankie Chiu (11) 82, 89 (171). Nett winner: Levi Sua (146).

THURSDAY

Julie Cheng cleaned up on Thursday as the Ladies completed round three on their Club Championship.

Cheng won the April Monthly Medal and was the Round 3 Silver Spoon winner, while also shooting the best score of the day with a nett 77.

Shirley McGrath was runner up with nett 80 and Liz Garvey was the stableford winner with 27 points.

Nearest the pin went to Yvonne Barrot, second hole (120cm).

SUNDAY

A busy golfing week finished on Sunday with Shaun Hegarty (19) winning the stableford competititon with 31 points on a countback from Matt Hogan. Hegarty also won nearest the pin on the 16th (3.80m).
