Loyal members take out Foursomes Championship

Gold letters went up for grabs at Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday with long-time club president Rob Nobelius partnering with loyal member Frankie Chiu to take out the Club Foursomes Championships.

Nobelius and Chiu had a gross score of 88 off the stick to win by one shot from Glenn Rees and Grant Wilson.

Royce Thompson and John McDonald were next best, winning third place on a countback from the pairings of David Leek/Noel Bonne, Frank Leontini/Jarrod Leontini, Ross McLean/John Curtin, Matt Lloyd/Scott Irwin and Delanie Lewis/Suzanne Van Strien.

Royce Thompson and John McDonald (20) came in with a 74-nett to win the Handicap Championships, a shot clear of Frank and Jarrod Leontini (19) with 75 nett.

Down the lines went to Noel Bonne and David Leek 75.5, Rob Nobelius and Frankie Chiu 75.5, Julie Cheng and Liz Garvey 76, Ross Maclean and John Curtin 77, Jack Scarborough and Lyriq Bester 77, and Michael Anlanger and Stephen Van Ingen 77.5.

The golfing week began last Monday with a stableford event where it took a countback to split John Curtin (16) and Carol Beard (26), who both scored 39 points.

Curtin won the top prize for the day via a countback, with down the lines going to Heath Barclay, Stephen Northcott and Michael Banger with 37 points, Chris Dalton and Bobby Edwards 36, and to Shirley McGrath and Chris McConnell with 35 points.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd: Noel Boyd (64cm) and 16th: Harry Bolotin (4.23m).

The Mid-Week Medal of Medallist was the coveted prize up for grabs on Wednesday and it was Tony Penney that handled the conditions best, carding a 73 nett to walk away the winner.

February Medals were also on the line and it was Stephen Northcott (19), with 71 nett, that took out the A Grade event by two strokes from Mathew Hogan (15).

In B Grade, John Kingman (23) fired a 72-nett to win by one shot from Terry Bull (28).

Down the lines went to John Wilson and Tony Penney 73, Noel Bonne, Terry Tisdale, Tony Sheahan and Glenn Charles 74, and to Graeme Steel, Stewart MacDonald and Phillip Mott with scores of 75.

The SuperComp Front 9 winner was Tony Penney (24) with 32 nett, while nearest the pin went to Royce Thompson (87cm) on the 16th.

The ladies strolled out for round one of the Summer Cup on Thursday and it was Carol Beard (25) that dominated proceedings, accumulating 38 points for a three-shot victory over Leah Barker (25).

Kay Jones was next best with 34 points, while Liz Garvey 32, Margaret Andrews 31, Leanne Barker 31 and Helen Aurish 30 all worked their way into the thirties.

And a big week of golf was rounded out on Sunday with Andrew Hale (16) enjoying the cooler conditions to score 37 points for a countback victory over Brian Bateup (22).

Christopher Pitts (19) came third with 36 points, while Nick Gray 34, Darren Grayson 34, Glenn Rees 33, Shaun Hegarty 33, Heath Barclay 32, Brett Nowlan 30 and Simon Fay 30 could all walk away with some positive vibes about their golf swings.

Golfers at Deep Creek are building up to an important time, with Club Championships being played towards the end of March, early April.
