Pakenham just fails to scale the Mountain

PAKENHAM VETERANS

Pakenham and District Veterans Cricket Club played Ringwood and Mountain District at the Pakenham Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Pakenham has 13 players and Ringwood 11, so it was decided that John Moore would play for Ringwood so both teams would have 12 players…Ringwood won the toss and decided to bat first.

Mick Johnson and Ian Jones opened the batting and a partnership of 20 runs in four overs ended when Jones 1 (5) was bowled by Bob Phillips.

Next over, one run later, Gary Paget 1 (2) was caught by Phil Brooks off the bowling of Jim Gregory. The score had reached 42 when Johnson 30 (30) retired.

Ringwood lost two wickets in the 16th over, Peter Ross took the wickets, when he bowled Danny Hanlon 15 (24) and David Leach took a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Kevin Dunn 8 (27).

At the drinks break Ringwood was 4 for 69.

Neil Donnellan 8 (18) was then bowled by Michael Barrow.

Not to be out done by his older brother, Alan Ross took two wickets in two balls when he had Robin Court LBW and John Moore bowled, both batters failing to score.

Peter Crilly 17 (30) then retired before Mike Beyer11 (23) was bowled by Phil Brooks.

Graeme Seymour 14 (30) retired before Mick Johnson returned and added 13 runs off 11 balls before he had to retire as well, finishing with an excellent innings of 43 runs off 41 balls.

Ringwood lost their ninth wicket when Trevor Barsenbach was caught by Dallas Wyatt off the bowling of Phil Brooks.

With four balls left on the 40th over, Brooks claimed his third wicket when he bowled Graeme Seymour 21 (38). Peter Crilly 19 (38) remained not out with Ringwood’s score finishing at 141.

All nine Pakenham bowlers bowled well, with man of the match Phil Brooks taking 3 wickets for 10 runs off his 4.2 overs. Other bowlers: Peter Ross 5-2/11, Alan Ross 5-2/17, Michael Barrow 5-1/18, Jim Gregory 3-1/20, Bob Phillips 5-1/14, David Leach 2-0/9, Les Jones 5-0/13, Dallas Wyatt 5-0/22.

Pakenham tried a different opening partnership this week with Alan Reitman and Phil Brooks opening the batting

Reitman 11 (16) was out in the sixth over when he was LBW to Mick Johnson.

Brooks 15 (31) retired before Pakenham lost its second wicket when Dallas Wyatt 16 (18) was caught by Trevor Barsenbach off the bowling of Mike Beyer; the score was 2 for 47 in the 12th over.

At the drinks break, Pakenham was one run behind Ringwood’s total at the same stage stage, but had lost two less wickets.

David Leach 17 (29), Peter Ross 7 (25) and Michael Barrow 10 (26) had all retired before Pakenham lost their third wicket in the 29th over when Bob Phillips 15 (21) was caught by Danny Hanlon off the bowling of Graeme Seymour.

At this stage Pakenham only needed 40 runs off 11 overs, but tight bowling restricted Pakenham to 8 runs in the next six overs before they lost the wicket of Jim Gregory 9 (14) bowled by Robin Court. Pakenham now needed 30 runs off 30 balls.

Maurice Esmonde batted slowly, scoring one run off 20 balls before he retired.

Les Jones scored a run-a-ball 14 before he was LBW to Graeme Seymour.

With four balls to go Pakenham still needed 10 runs.

After 40 overs Phil Brooks 15 (33) and Alan Ross 9 (14) were both not out and Pakenham was 5 for 136…finishing five runs short of Ringwood’s total.

Ringwood bowling: Graeme Seymour 5-2/22, Robin Court 8-1/20, Mick Johnson 8-1/21, Mike Beyer 8-1/21, Ian Jones 5-0/18, Trevor Barsenbach 4-0/17, Danny Hanlon 1-0/1.

This was another exciting game of over 60’s cricket that went down to the last over.

Next Sunday January 22 Pakenham play Kooweerup at Kooweerup.
