CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

Pennant bowls recommenced after the Christmas break on Saturday and Cardinia Waters went into battle against Berwick.

Wise heads prevailed before the game, when the team managers met and decided on an early start to the day’s proceedings.

A top of 35-degrees was forecast, which did eventuate.

Play was programmed to start at the early time of 10:30am instead of the normal 1:00pm time slot. And just as well, as the heat out rule would have seen the game called off late in the afternoon.

This did happen in many matches around the Metropolitan area where play started at 1:00pm.

Cardinia Waters started well, and at the lunch break held a slender two-shot lead, which was short lived in the afternoon session.

The ‘Wickers’ charged on relentlessly in the afternoon to record a comprehensive 39-shot win.

The home salvaged just two points with the rink of Bryan and Marion Stevens, Del Dance and Ian Kennedy winning by 19/11.

There are now just four games before the finals, and It would take a herculean effort for the Village side to take part.

They currently sit in fifth spot, and next week play Cranbourne at home.

They not only need to win that game, but need to win most of the last three games of the season, all of which are against teams above them on the ladder.

Next week has some really challenging games.

Top of the table Pakenham play second-placed Berwick and third-placed Mulgrave Country Club play Upwey Tecoma, fourth.

A much clearer picture of finals favourites will surely appear.

Club Championships

Three of the major club championships have been decided recently.

Club singles champions are Kerry Lewis, and Ray Naylor.

In the Open Pairs the successful bowlers were Alan Curtis and John Moore.

They won a close game with George Bernie and Danny Hill.

Now the attention turns to the Mixed Pairs, Minor Champions and 100 up.

Early rounds are currently being played.
