CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

MIDWEEK PENNANT

The first round of the season’s games concluded last Tuesday with side one travelling to Noble Park and playing against the home side on their turf green.

In what appeared to be a game of two parts, Cardinia Waters had a comfortable lead on the lunch break but then failed to keep up the pressure and handed the home side a slim victory by two shots.

The one winning rink was skipped by Bill Hite, ably assisted by Stephen Hale, Dennis Patmore and Robert Mitchell who hung on to win by just four shots.

Side one still holds on to fourth position on the ladder, despite this loss.

The two tear-away leaders are Narre Warren and Dandenong Club, who appear to have a strong hold on the top end of the ladder.

However, Cardinia Waters did defeat Dandenong Club in the first round and getting into form during the second half of the season could see the village team give a yelp come finals time.

The next game is at home against Edithvale, and Cardinia Waters need a win to consolidate their place on the ladder.

Side two had a bye last week, and this week they play Dandenong RSL on the Keysborough green. Just a few points separate these two teams on the ladder, so both teams will be eager to grab the 10 points available for shots up.

SATURDAY PENNANT

Cardinia Waters were at home against Upwey Tecoma last Saturday.

In an interesting game, Upwey Tecoma ran out winners by just three shots after leading for most of the day.

With four rinks played, both teams won two and shared the eight points available.

Best winning rink was skipped by John Van Vugt, who played with Micki Horton, Del Dance and Donny Gibson.

Their final score was 29-19, however this game fluctuated considerably.

The locals led early with a 13-1 lead after seven ends, but five ends later the lead had changed to a score of 14-15.

Not to be outdone the Van Vugt rink found rhythm late in the game, to fight back for a hard-fought 10-shot win.

Hanging on grimly for a one shot win was the rink of Stephen Hale, Mick Knight, Marie Stephenson and Terry Nye.

At the afternoon tea bell they were trailing by six shots, but once play resumed they scrambled back into the game.

Through a series of one shot ends they overhauled their Upwey Tecoma opponents for a well-earned victory.

The ladder now sees Cardinia Waters fairly well stuck in sixth place.

A decent turnaround will be needed to play in the finals.

Next week they play Hampton Park at home as the second half of the season commences.

When they met last in the opening round of the season these two teams played out a draw.
