Last-gasp win for Villagers

CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS – PENNANT REPORT

Saturday Pennant

Cardinia Waters defeated Pakenham in a sensational game on the village bowling green last Saturday.

Top of the ladder Pakenham found Cardinia Waters a formidable opposition, and the game ended in thrilling fashion, with Cardinia Waters grabbing victory with the last bowl.

Trailing Pakenham by two shots Cardinia Waters needed three shots to win, which they managed in fine style.

These two local teams always play their games in a very competitive spirit.

Pakenham was early leaders, however the villagers came back to lead by ten shots at afternoon tea. After the break Pakenham asserted their authority over the game again, but to their credit Cardinia Waters fought on valiantly to snatch the game on the final end.

Best winning rink for the day was Bill Hite, Tom Gogan, Del Dance and Terry Nye who won 28/18. They were travelling easy most of the day.

Even dropping a five late in the game didn’t stop them winning against the strong Jennifer Bainbridge combination.

The ever-reliable John Van Vugt led his rink to victory over Des Leigh’s rink 21/15.

John played with Micki Horton, Kaye Hale and Donny Gibson.

They had command of the game from the start, and fought off a Pakenham comeback to win by six shots.

The only hiccup was dropping a seven on end seventeen.

Cardinia Waters still remain in fifth position, but should gain confidence from their win on Saturday. Bowls takes a hiatus next week for the 2022 Victorian Open, to be conducted at Shepparton.

When play resumes on Saturday week Cardinia Waters play away at Mulgrave Country Club, who are second on the ladder.

Midweek Report

Cardinia Waters had a mixed result last Tuesday, as both sides played against Dandenong Club.

At home, side one lost their game by two rinks down, and one rink up.

In the shots department they went down by 14 shots.

Winning rink was the evergreen group of John Van Vugt, Ray Naylor, Tom Gogan and Jill Naylor.

They finished their game eight shots up.

These four players are always in good form, so it’s no surprise that they lead on the player’s table.

Side one hold down sixth place on the ladder, however they are only six points away from fourth

place.

Next week they play Keysborough (second place) at home.

Side two travelled to Dandenong Club, and after a slow start eventually overcame the home side to win two rinks up/one rink down.

Best winner was the rink of Len Judge, John Carr, Gary Bondfield and Paul Brindle who won 23-10. The other winner was the rink of Kerry Lewis, Jeni Edmonds, Brian Byrne and Ian Kennedy who recorded a score of 24-17.

Cardinia Waters were behind at the lunch break, but finished the game off better than Dandenong to record a handy victory.

This team are just hanging on to top spot on the ladder, still one point ahead of Churchill Waverley Golf Club.

Next week side two play bottom side Cranbourne away.

In a similar fashion to side one, Cardinia Waters players head the players ladder with the mercurial Len Judge on top.

Monday Night Triples

Always an enjoyable feature of the summer months Monday night triples commenced last week. Twelve teams took to the green on a balmy evening for this handicap-based competition.

Stormy skies almost surrounded the Cardinia Waters village, but didn’t stop play taking place.

The beautiful skies were a great background to an enjoyable evening.
