CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

MIDWEEK REPORT

A perfect score of eight shots up was the highlight of last week’s midweek pennant round for Cardinia Waters players.

Playing against Churchill Waverley Golf Club the rink of Len Judge, Dennis Patmore, Gary Bondfield and Paul Brindle scored an eight as they grabbed an overall four-shot victory.

It would have been a special moment for Paul Brindle who is playing in his first season of lawn bowls.

Side one was playing away at Chelsea and won just one rink on a difficult day.

The rink was won was John Van Vugt, Ray Naylor, Tom Gogan and Jill Naylor who scored 22-14.

Now holding down fifth spot on the ladder side one plays another away game next week at Willow Lodge.

Side two had mixed fortunes in their game against Churchill Waverley Golf Club.

As mention earlier, an exciting eight was pivotal in the two rinks up, one rink down score.

However, a disastrous losing rink of 12-33 saw CWGC take home the points with an overall 74-56 shots win.

This losing rink was down a stunning 2-33 with two ends to go, however they grabbed a five on each of the last two ends to save a little face.

The twos are third on the ladder and play Edithvale at home next week.

SATURDAY PENNANT

Top-of-the-table Berwick 4 easily accounted for Cardinia Waters 101-64 on the very soggy Berwick turf green last Saturday.

However, the end result doesn’t show the tenacious effort shown by Cardinia Waters.

The village side only scrambled one point from this game due to the rink of John Van Vugt, Micki Horton, Kaye Hale and Donny Gibson who fought hard to draw their game.

They jumped Berwick early leading 13-2 at afternoon tea.

The home team then picked up their game in the second half and just grabbed the draw on the last end.

Bryan Steven’s rink lost by one shot after also leading early in the game.

Entering the last end, they trailed by two but could only manage one shot up to miss out.

Probably not wishing to be mentioned was Bill Hite’s rink, who had a shocker of a day losing 9-36. Failing to get on the scoreboard until the 13th end, Bill’s four then showed great spirit to fight back seemingly having a much better second half before going down by 27 shots.

Berwick and Pakenham are both unbeaten on top and these two teams play each other next week. Cardinia Waters now hold down fifth spot on the ladder and have another away game next Saturday against Cranbourne.

Monday night triples commences on 7 November with 12 teams having entered this year’s competition.
