Mateariki runs riot at the Creek

DEEP CREEK GOLF

Great scoring was the story of the week at Deep Creek Golf Club with several players producing outstanding rounds of golf that will no doubt capture the handicapper’s attention.

Heavy rain late last week couldn’t stop the big guns from firing on Saturday with the rapidly-improving Leon Mateariki (10) playing a magnificent round of golf to score 42 points to take out the daily prize.

Runner-up Anthony Kemsley (24) was dead-stiff to finish in second place with his 41 points good enough to win most other events.

Other players to fire included Brenton Hollingworth and Dean Jones 38pts, Glenn Rees 37pts, Nick Gray 36pts and David Leek and Colin Crowle 34pts…who all won balls down the line.

Nearest the pins went to Nick Gray (0.65m) on the second and Dean Jones (1.68m) on the 16th with both having their iron-play dialled in.

Last Monday saw players take part in a Par competition with Phillip Tunstall (25) handling the tricky conditions best, finishing square with the card to hand in the best score for the day.

Tunstall won by three shots from a group of players including Ron Seamer, Bobby Edwards and Christopher James on -3. Nearest the pin went to Levi Sua (4m) on the second hole.

Harry Elyasie (6) played one of the rounds of the year at Deep Creek on Wednesday, scoring an incredible 43 points to win the A Grade stableford competition in a canter.

Elyasie’s score, which equates to a one-under-par 71 off the stick, was six shots clear of the field.

Noel Bonne (15) finished runner-up in A Grade with 37 points, while Gordon Edwards (25) scored 36 points to win B Grade.

Michael Banger (27) finished second in B Grade with 34 points while down the lines went to David McMahon 37pts, Ron Seamer 34pts, John Kingman, David Leek and Heath Barclay 33pts, and to Tom McDermott and Phillip Mott with 32pts.

The SuperComp Front 9 winner was Harry Elyasie with 22 points while nearest the pins went to Barry Williams (2.70m) on the second and the fired-up Elyasie (0.88m) on the 16th.

The ladies played a nine-hole competition last week with Carol Beard (25) scoring best to win by two shots from Marg Andrews.

And the golfing week ended on Sunday, when Brenton Hollingworth (24) scored 38 points to win the stableford event on a countback from the unlucky John Hutcheon (14).

Down the lines went to Brett Nowlan 37, Shaun Hegarty 36 and Simon Fay 34.
