CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS
MIDWEEK REPORT
Bowlers all over Victoria gave a collective sigh of relief when Midweek Pennant commenced this week.
Cardinia Waters continued to field two midweek sides, both in the same division of last season.
Side 1
A trip to Edithvale saw Side 1 start the season with a great win.
Edithvale is never easy to beat, especially at home, but the visitors ended up winners much due to an outstanding game by Bill Hite’s rink who romped home with a nice score of 33-7.
Bill played with Stuart Tokely, Del Dance and Gary Bondfield.
The home team won the first end, but Bill’s rink kept them scoreless until end 10. This set up the village team’s win, and they only conceded four ends of the 21-end game.
Also winning was the rink of John Van Vugt, Ray Naylor, Tom Gogan and Jill Naylor.
They won 23-17, and were victors on 12 of the 21 ends.
Only a stumble on two ends, when they dropped five shots, prevented them from winning by a substantial margin.
Cardinia Waters can be pleased with this win, which catapulted them to top position on the ladder.
Whilst there are four teams all on 14 points, they hold down first place by shots up. Next week this side will play at home against Narre Warren.
Side 2
Dandenong RSL Rec travelled over to Racecourse Road to do battle with Cardinia Waters side two.
One win, one loss and one draw saw teams level at the conclusion of play.
However it was Dandenong who won the day by eight shots up.
The winning Cardinia Waters rink were Jenny Edmonds, Kerry Lewis, Brian Byrne and Peter Mitchell who won by two shots.
The rink that drew was Mick Knight, John Carr, Terry Nye and Teresa Mitchell.
Cardinia Waters sit in fourth place on the ladder after the opening round.
Their section only has seven teams, which will cause all teams to receive one bye-round during the season.
Next week side 2 travels to Narre Warren to play against the Panthers on their new undercover greens.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Two district bowlers were among many from across Australia who took home awards from the Bowls Australia Awards Night at Brisbane last week.
Our very own Marion Stevens received a belated Hall of Fame Inductee Award. During her illustrious bowling career Marion has represented Australia at an international level, as well as representing her state and club in many championships. Marion and her husband Brian travelled to Brisbane for the awards night.
Both are still active bowlers, enjoying the twilight of their career at Cardinia Waters Bowls Club.
Brian is president this year, and Marion is a selector.
Narre Warren bowls stalwart Eric Sydenham also received an award for his work as a volunteer at Narre Warren Bowls Club.
Also he is a very keen and active bowler, even considered tenacious by many opposition players.
Eric received his award through his activities for the club during its recent $3million improvements program.
Narre Warren now leads the way with its magnificent covered synthetic greens.
Eric was part of a group who oversaw funding and construction of the new facility.
SATURDAY PENNANT REPORT
After all the bad weather around it was pleasing to start the Pennant season with a nice fine day.
Cardinia Waters fielded just the one team this season and they started the season playing away with a robust draw against Hampton Park.
Both sides were evenly matched, and scores were very close all afternoon.
At afternoon tea Cardinia Waters led by seven shots, however it was Hampton Park who came home best…catching up to record a draw.
Bill Hite’s rink was handy winners 24/19.
Bill played with Tom Gogan, Del Dance and Terry Nye.
Also winning were the rink of Steve Hale, Mick Knight, Robert Mitchell and Graeme Taylor who won 25/17.
Next Saturday Cardinia Waters will play Noble Park at home.
They are equal fourth on the ladder.
