CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS
Pennant season is fast approaching with cool and windy skies greeting just over 60 bowlers at the Cardinia Waters Bowls Club Opening Day for 2022/23.
Opening Day is a great annual event where the first bowls for the season are rolled down by significant members of the club, with members showing their unbridled enthusiasm for an exciting summer ahead.
Club president Bryan Stevens completed the formalities – welcoming everyone to the season – before Marion Stevens rolled the first Jack and club life member John Van Vugt sent down the first bowl.
After an enjoyable game, everyone then adjourned to the clubhouse for an even more enjoyable afternoon tea.
Cardinia Waters has adjusted its team structure this season, entering just one team in Saturday Metropolitan competition – down from two last season.
After struggling for numbers last season, the club is confident it can be extremely competitive with its division four team of 16 players.
Cardinia Waters will field two teams in midweek bowls on Tuesdays, with teams of 12 players in division three and division five set to do the club proud.
Pre-season practice games have commenced, with the first game against Pakenham finding the Cardinia Waters players a bit rusty.
Pakenham were too good for the village players and won all rinks.
Cardinia Waters then welcomed players from Kooweerup, and the home side showed more prowess, and with an improvement in form won all four rinks.
There is some important information that players at the club need to be aware of.
Entries are now open for Club Championships – for all forms of club events – and players interested should consult the club noticeboard.
And Pennant players should consult their club handbook regarding the dates of pennant matches this season.
The first midweek game is set down for October 11, and the first Saturday game in on October 15.
Players need to be aware that there is no play on Melbourne Cup Day, but that game is played on the Wednesday following instead.
