Heavy rain hits the Creek

DEEP CREEK GOLF

Friday’s heavy overnight rains continued through Saturday morning causing play to be abandoned at Deep Creek Golf Club for the week’s main event.

However, Saturday afternoon’s drying conditions were followed by brilliant sunshine and moderate winds on Sunday that saw the course already benefiting when players faced the starter’s gun to finish off the weekend.

Sunday’s stableford competition provided another opportunity for Leon Mateariki (11) to showcase his growing skillset, scoring 34 points to take out the day’s top prize.

Heath Barclay 32, Glenn Rees 31, Steely Mateariki 31 and Simon Fay 30 were next best on the leaderboard to win balls down the line.

The golfing week started off on Monday, with Tom McDermott (25) scoring 34 points in very tough scoring conditions. Bobby Edwards, with 28 points, and Rey Ryan with 27 were surprised winners of balls down the line.

The biggest field for the week stepped on to the first tee for Wednesday’s stableford competition where Heath Barclay (9) emerged victorious with handicap-breaking score of 37 points.

Ron Seamer (18) was runner up with 35 points, while Noel Boyd 33, Levi Sua 33, Stuart Cooper 32 and Tony Sheahan 32 collected prizes down the line.

Seamer won the Back-9 SuperComp with 20 points, while Sua hit his iron shot to three metres to win nearest the pin on the 16th.

Unfortunately, the ladies competition was once again washed out on Thursday, with persistent rains making preparing the course impossible for superintendent Rick McHugh and his dedicated ground staff.

Stableford competitions will be played this week on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday (ladies), Saturday and Sunday…weather permitting.
