Nobelius puts nouse to good use

DEEP CREEK GOLF

A strengthening breeze, and fairways with very little run, made scoring difficult for golfers at Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday.

Experience in tough conditions was most certainly an asset, with club president Rob Nobelius (14) putting years of course-knowledge to good use to card an A Grade winning score of 37 points.

Nobelius won A Grade by just one shot from the rapid-improving Leon Mateariki (11), who continues to improve his golf swing and shave his handicap at the same time.

Craig DeBono (27) won B Grade with 34 points, one clear of the fast-finishing David Leek (23) who had 20 of his 33 points on the back nine.

Leek was charging late, with 10 points in his last four holes alone.

Down the lines went to Jarrod Leontini 35, Rob McCrae 34, John Hutcheon and Steely Mateariki 33 and to John Piggott, Duncan Campbell, Matt Lloyd, Grant Wilson, David Nagel and Murray O’Dwyer with 32 points.

Nearest the Pins went to 2nd Hole: David Nagel (2m) and 16th Hole: Harry Elyasie (1.60m).

The golfing week kicked off on Monday at Deep Creek with the often dreaded Par event.

Heath Barclay (9) finished square with the card, the only player in the field to do so, to take the top prize.

Chris Dalton (9) won a seven-strong race for second place, claiming the runners-up cheque via a countback from Tony Penney, Rex Ryan, Michael Banger, Chris McConnell, David McMahon and Harry Bolotin with all players finishing on -2.

Nearest the pin on the 16th went to Stephen Northcott (2.70m).

The August Monthly Medal was the biggest prize up for grabs this week and it was claimed in very impressive style by Bob Naismith.

Naismith (18) showed the rest of the Wednesday field a clean set of heels, scoring 41 points to have a clear margin in both the A Grade and Medal battles.

Naismith won A Grade by a comfortable four shots, with the in-form John Curtin (18) scoring 37 points to finish back in second place.

David Bell (22) continued his winning ways, scoring 37 points to finish two-clear of Gordon Edwards (24) in B Grade.

Down the lines went to Rex Ryan, Matthew Hogan, Dean Jones, Stephen Northcott and Noel Boyd with 36 points, William Carmichael with 35, and Neville Taylor, Harry Bolotin and Frankie Chiu on 34 points.

The SuperComp Front 9 winner was William Carmichael with 20 points.

Nearest the pins went to: 2nd Noel Boyd (3.75m) and 16th: Frankie Chiu (.31m).

And another golfer who has been in consistent form of late, Glenn Rees (10), proved too strong for the small field on Sunday scoring 35 points to win by two shots from the impeccably-attired Simon Fay.

Nick Gray claimed a ball down the line with 30 points.
