DEEP CREEK GOLF

Strong winds had a real drying impact on Deep Creek Golf Club last week before 10 millimetres of overnight rain on Friday had golfers teeing off in soft conditions on Saturday morning.

But by the time the morning golfers had finished, the course was already drying out which is a real credit to superintendent Rick McHugh and his ground staff.

Only one Saturday of golf has been abandoned due to heavy rains or course conditions this winter, with the course ready to blossom over the coming weeks.

The August Monthly Medal was up for grabs on Saturday, played in stableford format.

David ‘Ding Dong’ Bell chimed in with a magnificent round of golf, signing off on a brilliant score of 40 points to win both B Grade and the monthly medal.

Bell defeated the in-form John Curtin (20) by two shots in B Grade, while Matt Lloyd (8) fired the best scratch score of the day to take out the A Grade event with 37 points.

David Mair (11) was runner up, two shots back on 35.

Down the lines went to Glenn Rees 35, Grant Wilson, Rob Nobelius and Dave Nagel 34, Neville Taylor 33 and Geoff Percival and Steven Van Roy with 32 points.

Nearest the pin went to first-group player David Leek, who held all-comers at bay with a shot to 4.2 metres on the second.

The golfing week kicked off with a Monday stableford event with no players breaking their handicap on a very tough day at the office.

Closest to breaking that mark was David McMahon (11), who scored 35 points to win by a comfortable two-shot margin over Heath Barclay (9).

Down the lines went to Rex Ryan, Noel Bonne, Noel Boyd, Glenn Charles, Tony Sheehan and Levi Sua, all on 31 points, with Roger Parker, Bobby Edwards and Tony Penney sneaking in a prize with 30.

Nearest the pins went to club president Rob Nobelius (7.0m) on the second hole and to Michael Banger (4.3m) on the 16th.

Wednesday golfers battled that aforementioned gusty breeze, with scoring once again difficult.

John Wilson (19) scored 34 points to win A Grade by one shot from Heath Barclay (9), while John Piggott (26) carded a best-of-the-day 36 points to win B Grade by four shots from Kevin Sutton (33).

Balls down the line went to Noel Boyd 33 and to Harry Elyasie, Bob Naismith, David McMahon, Terry Bull, Rob Nobelius and the proud Kiwi Murray O’Dwyer on 32 points.

The SuperComp – Back 9 – was won by Piggott (26) with 19 points.

Nearest the pins went to; 2nd Hole: Heath Barclay (2.50m) and 16th Hole: Noel Boyd (1.15m).

The wind was really starting to whip around the creek by the time the ladies took to the course on Thursday in search of the August Monthly Medal.

The mega-consistent Leah Barker (24) scored 33 points to win by two shots from her playing partner Suzanne Van Strien.

Nearest the pins (second shot) went to 2nd Hole: Norma Crebbin (0.50m) and 16th Hole: Leah Barker (0.86m).

And Ray Hewitt (21) finished the week off in great style by scoring 37 points to win Sunday’s stableford competition.

Heath Barclay continues to hit the ball well, scoring 35 points to be runner up, while Matt Yusoff with 34 points and Nick Gray with 32 ran into the prizes.
