DEEP CREEK GOLF

Recent heavy rains made for a soft surface and difficult scoring conditions at Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday with only the most in-form of golfers playing anywhere near their handicaps.

Closest to breaking square with the card was Robin McCrae (18), who scored a best-of-the-day 35 points to win B Grade by one shot from Jarred Bester (24) on 34 points.

A countback was needed to decide a winner in A Grade with Grant Wilson (15) scoring 33 points to take home the top prize from Rob Nobelius (14).

Down the lines went to Maddison Selleck with 33 points, David Bell, Graeme Steel, Marcus Cameron, Michael Banger, Dean Jones, Glenn Rees and Andrew Heagney with 32, and to Michael Anlanger, Patrick Farrell, Colin Crowle and Scott Irwin with 31 points.

The golfing week kicked off at Deep Creek on Monday with a ‘Gentsomes’ competition.

‘Gentsomes’ is a golf format that is a little obscure because it’s not played as often as the more popular Ambrose format.

Similar to Ambrose, a Gentsomes team is made up of four players and all players play their own golf ball from the tee.

The best ball is chosen and all players play from that spot; if it’s on the fairway, within one club-length, if it’s in the rough or a hazard, then the ball must be dropped in the same position.

But from this position, all players play out the hole with their own ball and record their Stableford score.

The best two of the four scores are recorded and totalled for the team score. the team with the highest number of points at the end of the round is the winner.

Teams of three and four participated in Monday’s event.

The winners, with a score of 93 points, were Rex Jobling, Tony Vallance, Heath Barclay and John Kingman.

Runners up, with 87 points, were John Curtin, Stephen Northcott, Michael Banger and Gordon Edwards.

Down the lines went to Glenn Charles, Ken Upton, Rex Ryan and Ron Seamer with a score of 86 points.

Nearest the pin went to David McMahon (0.30m) on the 16th.

Other scores were carded by David McMahon, Willie Carmichael and Stewart MacDonald (85 points), Phillip Mott, Noel Boyd, Roger Parker and Frankie Chiu (84), Ron Parsons, John Roberts, Daryl O’Grady and Kevin Sutton (83), Chris Dalton, Tony Sheahan and Royce Thompson (82), Pat Ellerton, Bill McDonald, Noel Bonne and Alan Borch (80), Christopher James, Bobby Edwards and Graham Brennan (78) and Phillip Tunstall, Tom Reid and Tom McDermott (76 points).

Scoring was once again difficult in Wednesday’s stableford competition with Neville Taylor (17) continuing his good form to score 34 points to win by one shot from John Curtin (18).

Taylor scored 39 points in last Wednesday’s event…but fell one short that time around.

Down the lines went to Bob Naismith and Dean Jones with 33 points and to Heath Barclay, Noel Bonne and Tom McDermott with 31.

The SuperComp Front 9 winner was Neville Taylor with 21 points and nearest the pins went to Bob Naismith on both the 2nd: (3.00m) and 16th: (1.28m).

Scoring really picked up on Sunday with Steely Mateariki (9) scoring a best-of-the-week 39 points to win by two shots from Nick Gray (5) with 37 points.

Down the lines went to Leon Mateariki, Shaun Hegarty and Brenton Hollingworth…all with 34 points.
