Franzi on fire at Deep Creek

DEEP CREEK GOLF CLUB

Conditions were diabolically tough at Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday with just two players overcoming the wind, rain and cold to break their handicaps in the May Monthly Medal.

Shane Franzi (19) braved the elements best, shooting a gross score of 89 – nett 70 – to win both B Grade and the Medal from the unlucky David Bell (25) who carded a nett 71.

Glenn Rees (10) continued his fine recent form, shooting a nett 74 to win A Grade via a countback from David Mair (10).

Down the lines went to John Curtin and Steve Morgan 76, Anthony Franzi and Dean Jones 77 and to Colin Maclean, Levi Sua, Steely Mateariki, Terry Bull and Peter Reilly with nett 78’s.

The golfing week kicked off last Monday with Frank Leontini (21) scoring a fantastic 41 points to win by two shots from Steven Smith (11) on 39.

Down the lines went to Bill McDonald, Philip Mott and Stewart MacDonald with 38 points, Roger Parker, Les Jones and Peter Mackie 35, Rex Ryan, David McMahon and Levi Sua 34, and to Chris Dalton, John Piggott and Harry Elyasie with 33 points.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd Hole: Frank Leontini (1.50m) and 16th Hole: Peter Mackie (1.60m).

Wednesday’s A Grade stableford event was won on a countback by Harry Elyasie (5) who scored 37 points to defeat Stephen Northcott (18).

The B Grade winner was Leigh Burton (24), also with 37 points, finishing two clear of Peter Mackie (23) on 35.

Down the lines went to Tim Pratt and David Calderbank 36, Neville Taylor and Tony Penney 35 and to Brian Webster, Ron Zomer, David McMahon and Roger Parker with 34 points.

The Supercomp Front 9 winner was Roger Parker (15) with 21 points and nearest the pins went to 2nd Hole: Harry Elyasie (2.20m) and 16th Hole: David McMahon (1.90m).

The ladies had a big day on Thursday with the May Monthly Medal up for grabs as well as round-four of the Silver Spoon where the last of the four qualifiers would earn their spot in the final to be played on June Medal Day.

Julie Cheng (30) is the rightful owner of that last spot in the final after shooting a nett 73 to score a very convincing victory.

Down the lines went to Norma Crebbin, Ginny Carter and Kay Jones.

Nearest the pin also went to Julie Cheng (2.85m) on the second hole.

The four players to have qualified for the Silver Spoon Final are February: Joan Rawson, March: Carol Beard, April: Shirley McGrath and May: Julie Cheng.

And the golfing week concluded on Sunday with Ray Hewitt (21) scoring 34 points to win via a countback from Darren Grayson and Matt Yusoff.

Down the lines went to Dean Maas and Nick Gray on 32 points.
