Honouring women who inspire Cardinia

The Cardinia Cultural Centre came alive on Thursday, 5 March, as the community gathered to celebrate the women who shape and strengthen life across the shire.

The 2026 International Women’s Day event explored this year’s theme, Balancing the Scales Through Her Story, through storytelling, reflection, and connection.

Attendees were welcomed with a moving Acknowledgment of Country before hearing from keynote speaker Nartarsha Bamblett. A proud First Nations woman, mother, and community leader, Nartarsha shared powerful stories drawn from more than a decade of experience in community empowerment, setting the tone for a meaningful celebration.

Claire Tonti-Filippini also delivered a keynote address that left a lasting impression on locals, while community members shared heartfelt stories highlighting the women who inspire them in their daily lives.

Many stayed on to enjoy a special International Women’s Day edition of The Thursday Lounge and an after‑hours viewing of Nikki Willson’s video and photographic exhibition, What’s Left Unsaid.

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Cr Brett Owen said International Women’s Day “unites us in celebrating the women who lead, nurture, create and inspire in every corner of our shire.”

“Last Thursday, at the Cardinia Cultural Centre we celebrated the women who shape and strengthen our community through storytelling, reflection and connection,” he said.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and recognise the contributions of women across Cardinia Shire.

“Their contributions strengthen our community every single day — through their leadership, their care, their creativity, and their resilience.

“Thank you to Claire Tonti-Filippini for her powerful keynote address, and to the community members who shared heartfelt stories about the women who inspire them.”
