“Neglect” leaves Fincks Road unsafe

Frustration is boiling over in Bayles as residents warn that dangerous conditions on Fincks Road are damaging vehicles and putting the community at risk.

In a letter sent to Cardinia Shire Council, one resident said gravel had been placed on the road by contractors but not “adequately levelled”, leading to rough and uneven driving conditions.

“This oversight has led to significant damage to our vehicles, affecting our ability to travel safely and reliably on this road,” the resident wrote.

The letter also highlighted concerns for elderly residents with heart problems and other age-related health issues, saying the poor road surface may exacerbate their challenges when traversing the area.

Many residents rely on Fincks Road daily, and the necessity of “continual vehicle repairs”, particularly to shock absorbers, bearings, and tires, places an additional financial burden on families.

“With the rising cost of living, it is especially disheartening that we are faced with the added stress of maintaining our vehicles,” the letter reads.

They urge the council to reconsider its approach to maintaining Finck’s Road, suggesting a one-time sealed surface as a more sustainable long-term solution that would reduce repeated maintenance and improve overall safety and quality of life.

Cardinia Shire Council General Manager, Infrastructure and Environment, Peter Benazic said Fincks Road was assessed as part of Council’s proactive inspection program, with grading works completed on 27 January 2026.

“Council continues to prioritise road maintenance systematically across the Shire’s network of more than 1600 kilometres of roads,” he said.

“Our Road Management Plan outlines how often roads are inspected and how quickly we respond to reports.

“Roads are prioritised and addressed efficiently based on inspections, weather impacts and community feedback.

“We remain committed to maintaining our roads to a safe and reliable standard and thank the community for their patience as this work continues.”
