A modern development of the Officer Kiln is now being considered by Cardinia Shire Council, with residents asked to provide their thoughts on the proposal to reinvigorate the historic site.
Prospective developer James Hicks Pottery Site Pty Ltd is proposing to do little to the heritage building other than covering the old kiln with a steel-frame glazed structure and building a commercial hub that includes a large extension for a restaurant, cafe and three-storey office space.
The permit application process has been authorised by the Minister of Planning, as it requires a necessary amendment to the Cardinia Planning Scheme to allow the use of a heritage-listed building.
A permit has already been issued for hospitality use, but it must be amended to accommodate the use of an office, which is a prohibited use under the existing heritage overlay. Only the Minister of Planning can sign off on the change being considered.
The proposal aims to maintain consistency with the built form of the kiln, with the office building planned to have an exposed brick facade similar to the kiln while incorporating modern architectural styles.
The chimney will be exposed, while the kiln will be covered from the elements, and the surrounding area is intended to be enjoyed by diners.
The old James Hicks Brick and Pipeworks was once one of the core institutions of Officer and was passed down through four generations of the family.
Built in the late 1800s, it is one of the oldest buildings in Officer still standing.
The Hicks family still resides in Officer. Sadly, the last surviving member of the family to have owned and operated the kiln, John Hicks, passed away in January.
