Elves silenced by vandalism

As Christmas approaches, the Gembrook community is feeling the loss of a much-loved festive tradition that for years brought joy, excitement and a touch of magic to children.

The anonymous resident (known as Gemma’s helper) behind the town’s popular Christmas elves has decided to step away, following vandalism that occurred at the end of last year.

She shared the difficult decision on the Gembrook Community Noticeboard:

“Dear residents, we have loved assisting Gemma (elf) last year in their christmas adventures but unfortunately due to time required and the vandalism at the end of last year we have decided not to continue this in 2025,” she wrote.

“Gemma and Brooky (elves) will be staying with Santa in his workshop this year and will not be returning to Gembrook. I still believe in the magic of Christmas and the joy it can provide people this time of year.”

For several years, Gemma’s helper hid the elves around town purely to spread Christmas spirit, starting with one elf before a second joined last year.

She remained anonymous throughout, with no expectation of recognition, donations or support.

Admin of community noticeboard, Linda Smedley said the decision not to continue was heartbreaking but understandable.

“Unfortunately Gemma has had to take Brooky back to the North pole early, after sustaining an injury that can’t be fixed,” she said.

“But when property gets damaged whether intentionally or not, it is disappointing.

“Sadly she has decided not to continue it this year as it really upset her.”

The decision has left many residents saddened, particularly families who eagerly followed the elves’ adventures each December.
