After more than two months of closure, Racecourse Road has reopened, with works still ongoing to upgrade the major route through Pakenham.
On Thursday, 18 December, the closure between Henry Street and Cameron Way was lifted after Racecourse Road had been blocked since late September.
Crews are working to install new and larger culverts at Pakenham Creek to lower the risk of flooding and reduce impacts on local residents and the road network during major rainfall events.
More than 50 U-shaped concrete units, called culverts, weighing up to seven tonnes each, were craned in to upgrade the capacity of the creek under the road.
Together, the reshaped creek and new culverts will ensure major flooding events over the roadway are minimised and will help keep more floodwater in the creek and away from nearby properties and the local road network.
Works remain ongoing as the Pakenham Roads Upgrade makes another big step towards completion in mid-2026.
