A large energy storage facility is being proposed for Bunyip North by a multinational energy company with the purpose of supporting the renewable transition locally.
UK-based Renewable Energy Systems (RES) intends to submit a permit application to Cardinia Shire Council in early 2026 for its Bunyip North Energy Storage Project situated on farmland just north of the Princes Highway.
The project will connect to the transmission network by the highway, RES said it has a 22-hectare footprint that will include battery storage containers, operations and maintenance facilities, and a switching station.
The battery will have a capacity of 400MW/2400MWh (400MW for 6 hours), able to supply electricity to over 250,000 households during peak hours.
RES says the project aims to provide reliable energy as more solar and wind power is integrated into the grid, as well as opening up local jobs and economic opportunities.
Technical and environmental studies are currently being undertaken while RES is notifying residents and local groups of the project for feedback.
If a permit is approved, RES expects to begin construction in mid-2027 and for operation to begin in 2029.
