Cardinia Gujarati Association Inc. (CGAI) recently brought the spirit of India to Cardinia Shire by celebrating two of the most revered festivals in the Hindu calendar: Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, and Ganesh Utsav, honouring the beloved elephant-headed deity, Lord Ganesha.
These sacred festivals hold deep spiritual significance not only for millions in India but also for the growing Indian diaspora across the world—including here in Cardinia Shire, Victoria. They serve as powerful reminders of universal values: Janmashtami teaches us courage, truth, and standing up for what is right in the face of adversity through the life of Lord Krishna, while Ganesh Utsav celebrates wisdom, resilience, and the importance of overcoming obstacles, as symbolised by Lord Ganesha.
This year’s CGAI celebration was a vibrant showcase of culture, talent, and togetherness. A standout moment was a theatrical performance by the junior members, who beautifully depicted Lord Krishna’s childhood and his triumph over evil—a performance that captivated the audience with both its message and enthusiasm.
The adult group also delivered a mesmerizing dance performance dedicated to Lord Krishna, earning warm applause and admiration from all in attendance.
A major highlight of the Ganesh Utsav celebrations was the traditional procession (yatra) of Lord Ganesha. The entire community participated with great energy, chanting and singing in unison, filling the atmosphere with devotion and joy.
More than just religious events, these festivals became a celebration of community spirit, cultural pride, and shared values. They reminded all present—regardless of background or belief—of the importance of unity, respect, and the richness of multicultural Australia.
