Residents plant out Garfield Rec Reserve

On Sunday 10th August 37 adults and 9 children put in a combined total of 114 hours of work, contributing to the Garfield environment.

Volunteers from Garfield, Maryknoll, Tynong North, Clyde North Warragul, Kooweerup, Cannons Creek and Bentleigh joined in unison to plant 750 indigenous shrubs and grasses along a section of the

Garfield Recreation Reserve perimeter.

This working bee was the fourth community collaboration to rehabilitate an area that was once regularly sprayed with poison.

Plants from the 3 previous plantings have grown very well.

Sunday’s effort of interplanting grasses and small shrubs was the continuation of creating a safer vegetation corridor for the Kooweerup Swamp’s small marsupial, the Southern Brown Bandicoot.

This nature corridor sits between shire biolinks and is an important environmental project.

Participants said it is always a wonderful occasion when like-minded folk come together to show their care of the environment.

“To be part of a wonderful day of community connecting and collaborations is hope for the future and fills my cup to overflowing. The only way forward is together,” event organiser Meg Platte said.

The day welcomed Cardinia Shire’s Environment Education Officer Ranger Annie Goodes, who joined the efforts and chatted about Gardens for Wildlife and the importance of helping the Southern Brown Bandicoot. Volunteers enjoyed time together after working with a lovely morning tea and lunch supplied by Brewsters Foodstore and cafe.

This day was made possible by the following grants: Cardinia Shire Biodiversity Grant, Cardinia Environment Coalition/Cardinia Shire Plant giveaway and the following supporters: Garfield Rec Reserve committee, Cranbourne Botanical Gardens Bandicoot Brigade, Cannibal Creek Catchment Landcare, Garfield Community Garden, Cardinia Environment Coalition, Windana, Intrepid Landcare and Garfield Community Shop.

The next opportunity to help with another important Landcare project will be Sunday 14 September from 9.30am to 2pm at Lovers Lane, Garfield.
