Who are you?

Casey artist Janine Farinski is one of many local creatives featured in the latest SECAN Gallery exhibition, Who Are You?, showcasing throughout August at Akoonah Park in Berwick.

Janine’s entry, titled This Is Me – A Self-Portrait of Strength and Joy, is a deeply personal and vibrant work that reflects both her identity and her ongoing journey with breast cancer.

“Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am still undergoing an intensive course of treatment, and it continues to be a life-altering experience,” she said.

“Through this painting, I set out to celebrate life — not just its light, but also its struggles — with honesty, colour, and hope.”

The bright and emotionally rich portrait was created to raise awareness about the staggering number of people undergoing breast cancer treatment, and to honour those who work tirelessly to support them.

“I painted this powerful piece to help highlight the enormous efforts made daily by so many who strive to produce positive outcomes for so many Breast Cancer sufferers. It’s a long road one must endure, and l am grateful to have the support of so many.”

In particular, Janine paid tribute to the team at Moorabbin Hospital.

“Their professionalism, warmth, and humanity have made an immeasurable difference.”

This Is Me will be on display at the SECAN Gallery every weekend in August, from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free, and everyone is welcome.

The exhibition launched on Saturday, August 2, and features a range of works by SECAN members, each offering a unique interpretation of the question: Who Are You?

“I hope you come along and support this exhibition,” Janine said. “There will be many interesting and varied interpretations of the theme from local artists.”

SECAN Gallery is located at Gate 6, Cardinia Street, Akoonah Park, Berwick.

Janine says she’s incredibly grateful for each step forward both personally and artistically, and deeply appreciates the continued support from her community.

“Your presence and encouragement mean more than words can say.”
