Lights to be replaced in Beaconsfield and Garfield

Street lights in Beaconsfield and Garfield are set to be replaced as Cardinia continues to rid the shire of banned mercury lights.

About 400 existing 80-watt mercury vapour street lights in Beaconsfield and Garfield estates are scheduled to be replaced over the next nine months by AusNet.

The affected street lights are in Berwick Views Estate, Panorama Estate and Coach House Lane in Beaconsfield, and Silky Oak Court and Briarwood Close in Garfield.

The lights currently all share the same fitting, the council has provided replacements which follow the same style.

The replacement is occurring as mercury vapour globes have been banned under the international Minamata Convention on Mercury.

There are a number of benefits associated with the new LED globes, which are approximately 80 per cent more energy efficient, provide improved lighting quality and visibility, with efficient technology that directs more light toward the street, and have lower maintenance costs.

The council has organised a drop-in information session on the lighting replacement program for Beaconsfield and Garfield.

This will be held on Wednesday 23 July from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Beaconsfield Community Complex, 8 O’Neil Road.

The pause on the replacement of the original remaining street lights in Heritage Springs and Lakeside Estates remains in place, pending the potential approval of a retrofit globe by AusNet.

The outcome of this review by AusNet is expected by April 2026.
