The fight continues amid heartbreaking setback

With the nationwide Baking for Brain Cancer fundraiser set to take place this Saturday, the campaign’s driving force—Berwick’s much-loved Tonie Dalton—has again captured hearts as she recovers from another major surgery.

Tonie, co-owner of Phil’s Pies and Pastries, recently faced a heartbreaking setback after doctors confirmed that her aggressive glioblastoma had returned. The news came just last week out from the fundraiser’s big day.

“It has been a whirlwind of a week, from detection of the recurrence on MRI, to surgery, and now to post-operative recovery. It’s hard to see someone that you love go through this,” her son Nathan said.

“We are so thankful for the team that has been looking after Mum whilst she’s been in hospital, the quality of care they have provided is just fantastic.”

The recurrence has only deepened the family’s commitment to the cause. Approximately 70 bakeries across five states will take part this Friday, each donating proceeds from a signature item to The Brain Cancer Centre, in partnership with Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer.

“This is exactly why more research is needed,” Nathan said. “No family should have to receive the devastating news that their loved ones’ brain cancer has come back, and that there are limited treatment options available. More work needs to be done to find a cure for this terrible disease.”

Phil’s Pies and Pastries will also participate, supported by staff and loyal customers rallying around the family.

They’re encouraging everyone to attend the community silent auction on Saturday, 31 May, with all proceeds supporting brain cancer research.

The Daltons hope the event will become an annual fixture and spark more momentum in the fight against brain cancer.
