Riding for Disabled Association Pakenham (RDA) looks set to stay where it is after councillors unanimously backed a move to see the equine-based not-for-profit secure a two-decade lease in town.

At the last council meeting of the year on Monday 16 December, Cardinia Shire councillors supported a motion moved by Cr Paton to support in principle a 20-year lease for RDA Pakenham at their facility on 775 Five Mile Road, Pakenham.

This will be a significant increase from their initial four-year lease, securing more opportunities at RDA Pakenham’s potentially stable home.

Committee member Ken Ellison said RDA Pakenham had been pursuing this matter for some time and is glad that this is one of the first developments of the new council.

“Very grateful for Paton’s support and Kowarzik for coming on board, happy with the way things are going,” he said.

“Things have started to grow since covid, we are trying to develop the site, but we can’t justify investment with a short-term lease.”

A more permanent home would allow RDA Pakenham to confidently pursue more long-term projects at their facility.

Such as seeking grants from public and private bodies to develop the site further.

Their programs are in high demand and expanding the facility would do a great deal in their service.

Specifically, RDA Pakenham seeks to build a cover for their arena as their service is currently subject to weather conditions.

RDA Pakenham relocated to the current location several years ago after they were moved from another location in Officer due to developement.

“I was really pleased that council could find this site for them, but now it’s time to get the long-term lease,” said Cr Owen, who seconded the motion.

“So they can invest in the property, get the other Government grants.

“I’m very supportive of progressing with this long-term lease for this community group that does an amazing job.”

The motion authorises the council to conduct community engagement on the matter next year and for a report to be brought to the council in the March meeting.

RDA is the leading organisation for the involvement of people with disabilities in equestrian sports providing important therapeutic and recreational services across the country.
