Men over 50 are encouraged to come together and discuss issues which impact them, as part of the South Eastern Men’s Discussion Groups third biennial celebration.

Representatives from the Pakenham Men’s Discussion day and night groups, as well as other neaby groups including Cranbourne East, Berwick and Beaconsfield, as well as groups across the North East, are encouraged to come along to the Outlook Community Centre from 10am to 12.30pm on Wednesday 30 October to celebrate the longevity of the group, with a $5 entry fee for morning tea and attendees then invited to a lunch at Club Officer.

Facilitator Ken McMaster said the group acts as a significant support for a large number of retired men needing to find meaning later in life.

“It’s a support and a practical help,” he said.

“Everybody within the group has a say.

“This group gives you the opportunity to express yourself.”

Member Trevor said the group is a place where he and others can enjoy human contact beyond one’s immediate family and friends.

“When you retire, you can feel totally useless,” he said.

“To have a support group like this is teriffic.

“You can only garden or play golf for so long.”

Fellow member Mick said as he retired just before the Covid pandemic, the group is a welcome support for his feelings of loneliness.

“I felt that the isolation was affecting my mental health,” he said.

“I thoroughly enjoy it.

“There are some times where the meeting is not long enough because I’m having so much fun.”

Ken said the group is grateful for the support of Outlook Community Centre and other supporters over the years.

“Without the support of organisations like Outlook, we couldn’t survive,” he said.
