A new name has been added in the mix of possible titles to Cardinia new suburb east of Pakenham by the efforts of Cr Moore who put up the title of ‘Hanora’.
Cardinia Shire Council prepared five names to be approved for final public consultation, yet Cr Moore put forward an alternative motion to add a sixth name.
Hanora refers to Hanora Carney of the well-known family of Pakenham/Nar Nar Goon.
Living in the late nineteenth century and through to the turn of the twentieth, Hanora’s farming with her children would see the Carney family own and farm a significant part of the land that Pakenham East is designated to be today.
“She was 44 when her husband Michael died in 1880, while raising seven children, Hanora was not only determined to keep the family farm, but enhance it,” Cr Moore explained.
“She was a very strong, determined and smart woman in the male-dominated world of those days.”
The descendants of Hanora still live in the area today, representing five generations of farming.
The addition was initiated by the Carney family who reached out to all councillors on the matter.
Contrary to the other five names, Hanora has not been submitted to Geographic Names Victoria. However, Cr Moore noted that there is no restriction on this for a name going to public consultation and the name has been carefully considered in regard to existing rules.
Cr Moore’s alternative motion was carried unanimously.
The six names will go to public consultation where the most popular will be chosen as the final submission for the suburb’s name.
