Clearing out the clutter

Casey residents with unwanted household chemicals clogging up the shed, cupboard and under the sink are encouraged to safely dispose of them at an upcoming home detox event.

Sustainability Victoria’s Detox your Home event is running from 9am to 3pm on Saturday 24 June at Akoonah Park in Berwick.

With community safety in mind, the event is drive-through, contactless and supported by a Covid safe plan.

Some of the accepted materials collected include fuels and flammable liquids such as turpentine and paint thinners, gardening chemicals such as herbicides and fertilisers, household materials such as bleach and cooking oil, chemicals for cleaning or managing car such as transmission fluid and wax and gas cylinders.

Chemicals that cannot be accepted include paint, thermometers/thermostats containing mercury: please note that mercury can be accepted in a container and motor oil.

Detox your Home events are staffed by expert chemists who identify and sort the chemicals for safe transport back to a licenced facility in Melbourne where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal. Chemicals collected are processed and recovered or recycled wherever possible. If they cannot be reused in any way, they are safely disposed of.
