Police warn of scams

Australians lost $568.6 million to scams in 2022.

That is $69 million more than 2020 and 2021 combined.

Police say recent reports are overwhelmingly scam-related.

Authorities warn that scams are becoming more elaborate, from people impersonating victims’ banks to scammers using callbacks and ‘please hold’ practices.

Police say to be vigilant of certain calls that may falsely inform you of a breach to your accounts or people that suggest you move funds to different accounts immediately.

It is recommended, if you’re contacted by a suspicious caller, to get their details and inform them you will ring the institution to verify using the institution’s contact number available on the internet.

Police remind people to never click on suspicious links through text message or emails.
