Where does our rubbish go?

Excited children from far and wide have had all their rubbish truck questions answered in a storytime reading by a local garbage collector.

Cleanaway driver Ross and education officer Dana read rubbish-related children’s books and held a Q and A with curious kids on Thursday 12 January at the Pakenham Library.

Some great kids questions included if Ross had ever broken a bin, where does the rubbish go and why are there two steering wheels in the trucks.

The children then had the opportunity to sit in the cabin of the truck and pose for photos with Ross.

Ross said seeing children wave to him on his route was the favourite part of his job.

The opportunity is part of the My Community Library (Myli) school holiday program.

Myli children’s literacy librarian Ivy said the first-time visit from a rubbish truck driver had been a great success.

“Kids are so curious. Trucks, tractors – those things do appeal to a lot of kids.

“I think with the rubbish trucks, kids know the sound of the truck coming. It’s part of their routine and they look forward to it.

“We’re really keen to run the event again in the future.”
