Bomb scare at Pakenham cop shop

The bomb squad has cleared a “suspect package” that was brought into the Pakenham Police Station Thursday evening, 24 February.

Officers were evacuated from the building around 5pm after a victim of a number plate theft brought in a backpack he found with his vehicle, Senior Detective Colin Beard told the Gazette.

Detective Beard said it appeared the bag had been left behind by the offender on the car’s side mirror.

Officers were not let back into the station until around 8.30pm once the bomb squad had cleared the backpack of any possible threat, Detective Beard said.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police said package that was left unattended at the counter was assessed and rendered safe by the bomb squad, with the surrounding area cordoned off as a precaution.
