Bandicoot caught on camera

Our furry little friend, the Southern Brown Bandicoot has been photographed for the first-time, scurrying the underground crossings in Kooweerup.

As part of the Strategic Sealed Roads Project and in partnership with the Royal Botanical Gardens Cranbourne, the council installed seven bandicoot crossings during the construction of Boundary Drain Road and Main Drain Road last year.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Jeff Springfield said the photo showed the efforts the shire had put in place to protect this nationally endangered species.

“We are proud to be a part of this trial and its efforts to protect these animals by reducing their road deaths,” Cr Springfield said.

“These cameras in these underground crossings will continue to monitor and collect data for further usage of the crossings in other projects. If evidence of Bandicoot activity can be observed, these crossings will become the new standard across the state which is exciting news.

“We look forward to more photographs of our Bandicoot friends as they continue to enjoy their journey through the underground crossings.”
