The 1st Bunyip Scout Group is in “dire” need of volunteers to keep the club afloat in 2022 following a tough two years of Covid-19.
The group is searching for two new leaders to help run the weekly activities for the Scouts and Cubs groups, with members calling on the community to put their hands up to help.
“It’s dire,” Bunyip group leader Tracey Cooke told the Gazette.
But having to shut down the group wasn’t an option, she said.
“We’ll do anything we can to make it not happen, we’ll team up with other Scout groups if need be,” she said.
“We have strategies in place to not let that happen but it’s all short term solutions.”
Tracey said after struggling through two years of online activities, the children were excited to finally be back to onsite activities but needed adult volunteers to assist.
“Being online is not what being a Scout is all about,” she said.
“We’re still rebuilding [after online learning], and it’s not only going on in our district.”
Beyond the fun and family atmosphere that Scouts offer volunteers, benefits of becoming a leader includes undertaking accredited courses that can be used as credits towards other studies.
The 1st Bunyip Scout Group will be holding come and try nights next Thursday 24 February from 7pm to 8.30pm for eight to 14 year olds and their parents.
“We’re hoping people will come along and see what Scouts is about,” Tracey said.
Kids will undertake a team work activity called a giraffe race and also cook bush donuts.
A parent information session will be held at the same time.
