Pakenham house fire under control

A small fire in a home on Radiata Circuit Pakenham has been brought under control by firefighters Thursday morning, 3 February.

The occupants of the house alerted emergency services around 9.45am of a fire in one of the rooms of the home, FRV incident controller Doug Broom said at the scene.

Mr Broom said after bringing the fire under control, firefighters would then conduct an overhaul.

“The fire actually burnt up through the ceiling and the roof, so we’ve got to take it down to make sure there’s no embers left up there and that we’ve put out all the fire,” he said.

“We do have a suspected cause at the moment…but it’s definitely not suspicious, we’re pretty sure we know what caused it.”

The family in the house was able to evacuate and wait for firefighters, which included local CFA, to arrive, Mr Broom said.

“If a message was to come out of this, the family did the right thing they recognised that there was a fire, got out, called the fire brigade and then waited out the front and met the fire brigade when we got here,” he said.

“So it just made it really easy for us, we just pulled up and straight away we could walk up to somebody from the house, ask them what the situation was, confirm all the people were out of the house – and that completely alters our tactics.”
