SHOWING support for her family who have been affected significantly by cancer was the key motivator for Pakenham’s Rebecca Callow to shave her head.
Rebecca held her World’s Greatest Shave event at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre on Saturday.
Ms Callow registered for the 2016 edition of the fund-raiser back in August 2015 and described the cause as being “pretty close to her heart”.
“I did it because both of my parents have gone through cancer in the last few years.
“I wanted to do something to raise money for cancer,” Ms Callow said.
Watching her mother struggling with losing her hair was a particular experience that inspired Ms Callow to complete the shave.
“I shaved her head for her and she didn’t want to look in the mirror.
“I wanted to shave my head then, to show that it was just hair and that it would grow back,” Ms Callow said.
Ms Callow said she was anxious when informing her partner of her decision to participate in the shave.
“When I told my husband I signed up I was worried about his reaction, but he was great. He even said he’d do it with me if I wanted,” Ms Callow said.
In the lead-up to the event, Ms Callow admitted that “the nerves were kicking in”, but said she looked forward to the experience.
“I’ve never had short hair before – I’m excited just as much as I am nervous,” she said.
