‘Beefy’s on a sports-mad mission

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM

A SPORTS fan living his dream will join the Melbourne Drift Trikers in Pakenham this weekend.
UK-born Kieran ‘Beefy’ Blake has recently begun 365 Days of Sport, a personal challenge which will see him watch 365 sports over a year.
After visiting Melbourne, Morwell, Kilmore, Geelong, Bairnsdale, Brisbane, Sydney and Anglesea since the start of the challenge two weeks ago, he will arrive in Pakenham on Sunday afternoon.
Beefy said he heard about the club and contacted them with the idea, and was delighted at their enthusiasm.
“I’m really looking forward to it. It’s good when I get to go and watch something completely different,” he said.
“It will be interesting to see how far I can get with it in one day.”
Though drift triking may not be considered mainstream, it’s certainly not the most unusual sport on Beefy’s list.
“We’re visiting Greenland for the Winter Arctic Games, which is essentially the arctic Olympics,” he said.
“There’s a sport called airplane where the athlete lies face down with their arms out.
“Then their team lifts them up and carries them and the winner is whoever can last the longest before they go limp.”
Beefy dreamt up the challenge in a pub many years ago, and has spent a long time planning and saving to make his dream a reality.
He has calculated that the coming year will see him travel to 49 countries, catching 220 flights and covering 800,000 miles.
Following the completion of the year, he hopes to release a book and a documentary.
The Melbourne Drift Trike club invites the community to join them for an afternoon of drift triking and a barbecue lunch this Sunday 8 November. The session will start at noon at 150 Pakenham Road, Pakenham.
