Need for Bunjil

I REFER to the letter ‘Theatre of the Absurd’ from F. Bordei (Berwick News, 25 June) which makes incorrect statements about the Bunjil Place project and council’s priorities.
Council engaged an independent research firm which conducted a telephone survey of over 300 people as well as analysing 200 online responses of residents living in Casey and neighbouring communities in May 2014. The telephone survey was statistically based, and all residents were invited to have their say in the online survey.
The survey revealed that 82 per cent of respondents agree there is a need for a cultural and community precinct in south-east Melbourne and 77 per cent said they would visit the precinct once open.
The writer is also concerned about unemployment rates, and so will be pleased to learn that while under construction Bunjil Place will create more than 1200 job opportunities, injecting approximately $83.5 million into the regional economy, as well as an additional 53 ongoing jobs once completed.
To clarify, Bunjil Place is not just an arts facility or new council offices. Rather, it will provide an unprecedented, diverse mix of arts, leisure, entertainment, library and civic facilities, which severely lacks in Casey.
We encourage residents to visit www.bunjilplace.com.au for the true facts about this project.

Cr Mick Morland,
Mayor, City of Casey.
