New app-roach to exercise

With fitness providers at local's finger tips, the list of excuses to avoid exercise has become shorter.

ABOUT 60 fitness providers in Cardinia Shire have signed up to a new health app designed to make exercise easier.
From pilates to netball and basketball, the free TeamUp app provided by VicHealth helps users find their motivation along with a range of free or low-cost fitness providers.
One provider helping to whip locals into shape is Cardinia Physio and Fitness in Beaconsfield.
Owner Larna May, a qualified physiotherapist and personal trainer, understands that everyone’s goals, abilities and bodies are different and offers programs to suit all needs.
She has listed her services on the navigation app.
“Finding the motivation to stay active can be hard, but TeamUp makes it easier to say yes to exercise when you’ve someone else to help motivate you,” she said.
VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said the app aimed to help individuals overcome the barriers of a busy life by linking people with opportunities to get active in their local area.
“TeamUp helps you find your motivation to get up off the couch and go for a walk or run. It makes getting active fun and social by connecting you with like-minded people in your area,” she said.
Cardinia Shire Council actively promotes healthy lifestyles throughout the community through a range of initiatives including Healthy Together Cardinia Shire.
It currently works with almost all of early childhood services in Cardinia Shire along with 66 per cent of primary school and 28 workplaces, teaching people how to grow and cook healthy foods in their own backyards or endorsing physical activity programs locally.
The initiative, however, lost all of its funding in the newly released federal budget.
VicHealth’s free TeamUp app is available through the web app store.
