PAKENHAM GOLF CLUB
NINE golf clubs from all over West Gippsland took part in the Fayde Golf – Pakenham and District Golf Club Plate at Pakenham on Sunday.
The weather in the morning did not look promising, but Course Superintendent Rick McHugh did a great job removing the surface water from every green prior to play.
With a total of 109 points, the team of Stephen Northcott, Michael Banger, Rich Paton and Ray Leonard ensured the Plate would stay at Pakenham for another year.
The Garfield Golf Club held its plate on Saturday and the aggregate overall winners from both Garfield and Pakenham were the Garfield team of B. Calderara, I. Hopper, C Gilbert and S. Kohut with a two-day total of 187 points.
Individual honours went to P. Van Der Horst, also from Garfield, with 39 points. The PGC would like to thank members who volunteered their time with special mention to Kevin Wraight and Della who slaved over the barbecue. Also thanks to Fayde Golf Apparel for their ongoing support.
Monday
Frankie Chiu (15) won the Stableford event, shooting a great round of 44 points from Les Jones (28) with 43 points. Down the line balls went to 37 points.
Wednesday
A very wet and cold morning saw most players choose the comfort of a fireplace over venturing out onto the course. Trevor McQualter fired a great round of 40 points to beat Ted Schreuder (32) on countback. Stewart MacDonald took the first nine holes to warm up before shooting 22 points to win the super comp. The ball comp went down to 36 points.
Saturday
Cool overcast conditions met the players as they arrived to do battle. The course is starting to play a little longer now and the scoring has returned to normal. Michael Popof (27) shot the best score of the day – 39 points. Darren Grayson (11) took the honours in A Grade with 37 points, while Grant McCullough, fresh from being fitted for a new set of clubs, by the clubs, shot 38 points to win B Grade. Balls went down to 35 points. Albert Hill won the Sunday comp.
Ladies
Thursday saw the Ladies April Monthly Medal – Stroke and Putting competition played.
Not surprisingly it was Ladies and West Gippsland Champion Shirley Roberts who handled the tough conditions best, shooting 75 nett to take out the Medal. Shirley McGrath won B Grade with 77 nett and Aileen Fromhold was the best in C Grade also with 77 nett. Merle Beasley needed only 30 putts to complete her round. Kay Jones, Margie Andrews and Aileen Fronhold were our big brutes of the day, winning their respective grades long drives, while Leah Barker and Shirley Roberts won NTP’s on the 2nd and 16th holes respectively. Balls down the line went to 77 nett.
This week there is the game everyone loves to hate, Foursomes, which is also the Doris Chambers qualifier.
A reminder to all ladies that the following week is our Ladies Charity Day with the Make It, Grow It or Bake It theme to donate something to be raffled off. The event will be American Foursomes Teams Event.
