Kooweerup bucks the trend

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

WHILE Victoria has experienced an upwards trend in unemployment, jobless numbers in Cardinia Shire have only risen slightly.
A report by the Australian Government’s Department of Employment has shown a small increase from 5.8 per cent unemployment in September 2013, to 6.1 per cent a year later.
Kooweerup has helped keep the stats down, with a decrease in jobless figures. In a year, unemployment in the town of more than 3,000 people has dropped .3 per cent.
Bunyip and Garfield’s jobless rate has stayed the same at 4.7 per cent, while 57 people added to Pakenham North’s increase and an extra 67 people lifted Pakenham South’s unemployment numbers.
Victoria has experienced an overall rise in unemployment from 5.7 per cent to 6.5 per cent over the 12-month period.
Large increases were recorded in Batemans Bay, New South Wales and Melbourne’s own Broadmeadows.
